Popular Group Physical Exercise Activities in the 21st Century

An important leisure centre development since 2000 has been the facility provision for the growing popularity of exercise classes. We have come a long way from those rather traditional keep fit classes in Harlow Sports Centre’s sports hall. Now, new or improved centres often have two or three dedicated ‘studio’ spaces, capable of accommodating income and fitness generating ‘classes’ or group activities, large and small.

Originality, enterprise and marketing has led to numerous different types of classes being branded across UK leisure centres. The essence of these activities is the social and physical motivation of working in groups and having fun.

Drawing particularly on examples from facilities run by LED Community Leisure [East Devon and South Somerset], Oldham Active and Castle Point Borough Leisure this is a list of some of the numerous ‘marketed’ activities across the UK. Many ‘titles’ overlap, or are duplicated, simply based on how various opportunities are titled and presented:-
